Writing Prompt, Day 9: Friendship

Write about being friends with someone.

I am friends (and have been friends) with many people, but I want to focus on close friends and talk about this generally. I have a friend who I have known for as long as I can remember. I don’t remember not knowing him, or for that matter, not being friends. We grew up together and I can always count on him to have my back. He is like a brother to me.

Speaking of brothers, I have three younger ones. They are also close friends of mine, although the oldest is probably the closest to me. We were born only a little over two years apart and we spent practically every waking (and sometimes sleeping) hour together. We were homeschooled, so we were classmates as well. This bond has gotten much stronger over time and he is definitely a close friend today.

Lastly, my wife is another close friend that I cherish. She has probably taken the others’ places as the closest and most cherished. Our friendship is stronger, but it is also very different. I think I am more protective and definitely more attached to her. The others are family and a large part of me, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that she is me-in a sense. We are one and I love and protect her as such.

I have been blessed to have such great friendships among others. I hope and pray that we will each continue to be friends and to make friends with others. I thank God for each of them and what they have been in my life. Without them, I would be a very different man today…and I don’t believe it would be for the better.
