Writing Prompt, Day 12: The Letter Poem

Write a poem using words from a famous letter or a letter from your own collection.

Fight on and fight strong because I know it won’t be long,

Until I die or return home, I hope it won’t be alone,

I can’t help but feel that all of this is wrong,

Like getting deja vu while listening to a new song.

The war goes on and on endlessly, relentlessly,

My mind tries to understand and make sense of this calamity,

I question my actions, my motives, my apathy,

But to speak against the war would get me crucified for blasphemy.

Despite potential consequences, before my passion slows,

I have to speak my mind to you, my time is drawing close,

*I believe the war is being deliberately prolonged by those,

Those who have the power to end it, but no one else even knows.

I hope you hear me loud and clear and heed these words well,

With what little time I have, I’ve no one else I can tell,

Please spread the word and share with all this my final knell,

Hurry now my child, or save us all from hell.

*Quote from Siegfried Sassoon, A Soldier’s Declaration.
