Writing Prompt, Day 3: Dancing

Who’s dancing and why are they tapping those toes?

The melody moves through the room and people sway from place to place. The room is only lit enough to see figures and shades of color. Up close you can make out faces, but it’s hard to notice any others besides the one in front of you. Maybe that’s the purpose of the cozy, dimly light atmosphere. The music playing is fast enough to move you, but soft enough to keep you from rushing in.

The couples are close enough to each other that it can be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Another trick from the lights? Possibly. Fortunately, they all seem to be caught up in each others sight or embrace. Caught up enough to forget that there are even others in the room. It’s apparent that the couples are very familiar with each other, but still foreign enough that they want more. It’s a beautiful thing to see.

They move side to side in a rhythmic motion. You would swear that they are each moving to their own rhythm, but as soon as you focus on one you realize they are perfectly synced to the music. Moving to the next couple you see the very same rhythm. Unique on the surface, deceptively common beneath. The group moves here and there as if controlled by a single, collective conscience.

Finally, the music fades as another song ends. The solidarity of the group weakens as each couple reacts in different ways. Some embrace tighter. A kiss. A smile. Some distance from each other. Others exit the floor. Then, just as it seems that the common ground between them might fracture completely, a faint whisper fills the air. A light beat. Strings. Another song begins. The lights drift back down low. Bodies mingle again. The collective sway resumes. Unity is restored. The dance continues and continues and continues evermore.
