Writing Prompt, Day 7: Dream-catcher

Write something inspired by a recent dream you had.

I was finishing up my last semester for my MBA and preparing to teach classes at Northeast. My child was now two or three years old. Old enough to walk fairly well. I couldn’t tell if it turned out to be a boy or a girl, but that wasn’t very important at the time. My wife was no longer pregnant. I was at work, but the office was different. I never saw any coworkers, but I did see some instructors. I helped them prepare for their classes and talked to some of their students.

The next thing I knew, I was back at home. The house was very clean and our new fireplace was completely finished and operational. A fire was going and it was obviously cold outside, but there was no snow outside. The trees had no leaves and the sky was tinted gray. I say with my wife like we did so many other times and talked by the fire. I remember wondering where my child was, but not in a fearful way. Maybe they were with family.

Finally, I got to work on a large term paper that I had due. Everything else faded in the background. I was very behind on it, so I was worked diligently to catch up. The harder and faster I worked the fuzzier things became. Sounds faded. Things in my peripheral vision blurred and darkened. Other thoughts disappeared. Then, the screen and keyboard started to blur. I was just about to finish the paper when everything finally blacked out. That’s when I heard the dripping and crackling of a coffee pot. My alarm. I woke up from the dream. (And got to work on that homework!)

  • This post was only loosely based on a real dream that I had recently. The general theme is correct, but emotions, details, and descriptions have been changed or exaggerated. I did this to make it a little more readable than my typical, bland, recap-style dreams would have been.
