Writing Prompt, Day 5: Eye Contact

Write about two people seeing each other for the first time.

Mark rushed into the room. It was 11:04, the first day. “Class starts at 11 sharp, so be here by 10:59!” The words of his professor reverberated through his head so much that he wasn’t paying much attention to where he was going. That’s how it happened. The collision nearly knocked his book bag off his shoulder. Shelby’s notebook hit the floor as she let go to catch herself before she fell. She was having an equally hectic morning. First generation students in a foreign world.

Immediate apologies ensued while they collected themselves. As they turned to face each other their eyes tracked up from feet to legs to torso to neck. Then, their eyes met and, for a split second, the chaos was gone. She was so beautiful despite her hand-me-down outfit and disheveled hair from rushing across campus. All he saw was her bright green eyes behind her dark brown hair. He was handsome although a little rough cut and obviously a little clumsy. Forget that though. She couldn’t get past his deep blue eyes. This could be the first time they had stopped rushing all morning.

Like a rude alarm clock, the split second passed and the instructor intervened, “Would you two like to join us this morning?” Shelby blushed a little, tucked her head, and hurried to her seat. Mark smiled and found a place to sit as well. The first day of class had turned into the first day of something much larger than school.

(I didn’t go too far into this story since it was just supposed to be about eye contact. Although I’m sure Mark and Shelby ended up happily ever after. It was getting a little too cliche for me.)
